I think I picked this up on a Free Comic Book Day several years back. I’m on a quest to actually read a bunch of the comics I’ve acquired over the years, then pass them on, so I can reduce the amount of stuff I own. Most of what I’ve read recently hasn’t been interesting enough for me to feel like writing a review for the site, but this one stood out.
There was a time, in the 90s and early 2000s, I guess, where I was really into Urban Fantasy, especially the stuff that leans more toward Clive Barker’s style. Though I’ve drifted away from the genre, generally, this was a nice reminder of how fun it can be. Greg Rucka is one of those comic writers I pretty much always enjoy, but for some reason, rarely seek out. I remember really liking Whiteout way back when. I don’t recognize Nicola Scott’s name, but it seems like (as of the time this was published) she’d done a bunch of work on DC titles. Whatever the case, I really like what she’s done here. It’s mostly in grayscale, with occasional punches of color. It all looks really good.
The overall story deals with a witch who works a day job as a cop. A weird hostage situation tips her off that something is amiss. What follows is a series of escalating weirdness. We also get hints of villains, as well as allies. I was pretty intrigued by how things were going, as events didn’t play out as I expected.
This is a pretty cool book, and I was left curious enough at the end to want to check out the next volume. I think there are maybe three volumes, total. Anyway. I’ll have to find volume 002.
