Comic Review: I Roved Out in Search of Truth and Love

I Roved Out cover

Poking around on Tumblr, looking for some interesting art, I stumbled across the work of Alexis Flower.  It wasn’t what I was looking for, but it was pretty good. Some of it was a bit…racy. Fast forward a few months and I found out the art came from a webcomic that was being collected into a hardcover edition.

Let me make this clear.  This comic is porn. It’s in the tagline, “a warmly pornographic fantasy saga.”  It’s not for those easily upset by graphic illustrations of various sexual acts (and I mean really, really graphic). But that’s also not all the comic is about.  It’s actually pretty well written, with some good characters and an interesting story.

While reading it, I was reminded of 1970s tabletop RPGs like D&D, and classic Fantasy stories like Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser or Michael Moorcock’s Elric.  It’s funny, weird, and creative.  I’m looking forward to more of the story.  I wish there was more stuff like this out there.  Genre comics for adults that are well illustrated and written, and aren’t just more manga.  Give me more.

Unlike a lot of ‘adult’ comics I’ve read, the whole thing is rather good-natured and lighthearted.  The sex is all consensual (unlike a lot of European stuff I’ve read) and enjoyed by all. It’s also fairly inclusive.  So, thumbs up.

You can read it free as a webcomic, or you can buy a hardcopy with extended sequences.

If you like what I do, you can buy me a coffee. Check out my Facebook, Twitter, or Goodreads.  And take a look at my Patreon page, where I’m working on a novel and developing a tabletop RPG setting. You can also read my fiction over on Amazon.
