Jim Rugg and Brian Maruga have created a fun retro-vibed street avenger. Street Angel aka Jesse Sanchez is a homeless youth with super skateboard skills and a penchant for fighting ninjas. Similar to Rugg’s Afrodisiac, it is rooted in old comics in style and content. It does, however, have more coherent stories often with beginnings, middles, and ends.
Like a lot of old comics, continuity is vague and haphazard. Characters return, but their relationships don’t always feel the same. What Street Angel can do and the sorts of foes she fights can vary. Though ninjas are a constant.
I do appreciate the story that has a guest appearance from Afrodisiac.
If you like comics, especially if you have an appreciation of the deep and weird history of comics, this one is worth checking out.
